Sun shines for Schools Open Day at Emirates Old Trafford

1,400 primary school pupils and their teachers enjoyed a memorable trip to Emirates Old Trafford as they took in Day Three of Lancashire’s Specsavers County Championship match with Hampshire on a scorching day in Manchester.

Lancashire Cricket Foundation’s Schools Open Day, now in its sixth year, opens the doors of Emirates Old Trafford to children to come along and witness a cricket game first hand and take part in a range of physical, educational activities around the ground.

Pupils from All Saints, Stockport, Newall Green and Wythenshawe Primary School had the opportunity to welcome the Lancashire side out onto the pitch ahead of the days play.

While during the lunch break, all in attendance were thrilled as Club mascot Lanky the Giraffe stormed to victory in the mascot race that took place out on the pitch.

Away from the action, a specially created zone was set up in the concourse featuring activities run by the Police, RAF and the Fire Service, as well as an inflatable cricket bowling area. With temperatures surpassing 30 degrees Celsius during the day, the ice cream van proved a popular addition.

Sandy Mitchell, Head of Community Growth for the Lancashire Cricket Foundation, said: “We were delighted to welcome around 45 primary schools from across the North West to Emirates Old Trafford.

“It’s all about getting them through the gates and giving them a positive first experience of Lancashire Cricket inside an international sports venue and show them everything that cricket can offer them.

“This is an important event for us that is fed from all of our other work in the community such as All Stars, Chance to Shine and Education Without Boundaries, this is a celebration of all that work.

“The weather was perfect and allowed the children to have a great experience which is exactly what we wanted to achieve from the day.”
