Bootle take inaugural indoor Women's title

Bootle win first Women's indoor competition

A hugely successful first Liverpool Competition Women’s and Girls’ Tournament concluded on Sunday at Toxteth Firefit Hub, with 60 players from seven clubs in 10 teams putting on a fantastic display.

In the Women’s Competition, Firwood Bootle and Old Xavs faced off in the final having shared top spot in the group, both winning four of their five games. Bootle’s attack was again decisive limiting Old Xavs to 218 and their batters confirmed the win in the last over. Colwyn Bay took third spot beating Wavertree by two runs in an exciting and close finish. This capped off a great day for Colwyn Bay who earlier had taken the Girls’ U15 title by beating Old Xavs - who were appearing in their second final of the day - by 26 runs. Wavertree took third with victory over Hightown by 15 runs.

At the conclusion of The Women’s Competition, the presentation was made by Jen Barden, Women and Girls Manager at the Lancashire Cricket Foundation. As well as congratulating all the players who took part and the League for putting on the competition, Jen outlined how this links to wider W and G activities in the county. Again, all participants from the competing clubs: Bootle, Colwyn Bay, Liverpool, Old Xaverians, Southport and Birkdale and Wavertree received a medal and then it was left to Jackie Rose, Firwood Bootle’s captain to step forward and proudly receive the trophy.

There was again an exceptional batting performance from 15 year old Caitlin Swift, who hit 11 sixes on Day 2. Going with her five from Day 1, she struck a total of 16 sixes across the tournament.

Paul Bate, the League’s Women’s and Girls’ Cricket Officer, again reported the games were extremely competitive and produced some great cricket and dramatic finishes.

“We could not have wished for a better first event. There is clear demand for women and Girls competitions within our League – this event was fully subscribed before Christmas. We are seeking to take all of this positivity and momentum into the forthcoming season. I am pleased to report that discussions are well underway to put together an outdoor product for both adults and juniors, to capitalise on this demand and enthusiasm.”
