#WomensCricketMonth: Sefton Park CC

Throughout September, we're celebrating #WomensCricketMonth by profiling a series of clubs across Lancashire who are currently hosting women's and girls' cricket activity... next up, it's Sefton Park Cricket Club

Sefton Park Cricket Club

Current women's and girls' offering at your club: Sefton Park have teams from Under 9s up to Under 15s with summer training at the club and Liverpool College on Monday evenings from 6pm. They also offer women’s softball and are in the process of starting up a hardball side

Established women's and girls' set-up since: Sara Begg has been involved in cricket development since She was 16, but in 2017 took a bit of a leap into a new career in Public Health. She moved into a flat round the corner from SPCC, and because of her interest in using sport for good got in touch to chat about the work Opening Up do on mental health in cricket. She was surprised at the shortage of clubs offering women’s cricket in Liverpool and as they got talking it was clear there was an opportunity to get something started.

They agreed to get a softball festival on the go at the end of that summer, and the club then backed them by paying in advance for a hall for winter training. Things grew slowly over the winter as word got out through the SPCC community and then really started to thrive as they got outside and started to get games played. The club have now participated in two seasons of LDCC women’s softball tournament, this year finishing fourth in the league

Goals for the future: Next season the club hopes to progress in the softball league and encourage new people to join cricket. They will be offering hardball cricket in addition to softball and hope to have a women’s team for a hardball option offered by LDCC. They also wish to continue to have fun and encourage women and girls back in to sport
