2024 Season Review for Lancashire Seniors.
The season started on a very wet note and four of our first five group games fell victim to the weather, it seemed to be that every Tuesday our designated match day was on the weather radar for rain!
Eventually we managed to get a run of games together and at the conclusion of our group matches, we managed to win the required number of games to secure a top two place which meant we qualified for the main cup competition, our only defeat being to Derbyshire at Littleboro' where it is fair to say we had a real off day with our bowling and fielding.
This meant we went into a newly formed Phase 2 Competition where we were paired against the top two counties from 2 other groups to form Group A. Our opponents in this Phase were Essex, Warwicks, Leicester and Norfolk
and the way the organisers had devised it meant we did not play the other team from our original group namely Yorkshire.
The first two Phase 2 games fell victim to the weather and we recorded victories over Leicestershire and Norfolk (both Home and Away) and suffered defeat in controversial circumstances via the DLS away to Essex. The final
Phase 2 game saw us play Warwickshire at Heywood and after Warwickshire had batted, rain duly arrived at teatime to wash out another game when we were favourably placed.
We finished top of our Phase 2 and consequently we played the runner up in Group B who were Wales in the Semi Final. The Semi Final scheduled for Heywood was an evenly contested match. but we eventually emerged winners and so qualified for the final against our old foes from across the Pennies who had defeated Kent in the other Semi Final.
The game was scheduled to take place on the 10th Sept, but due to bad weather was put back to the 12th when we eventually able to play it. Lancs won an important toss and reduced Yorkshire to 8 for 3 in the fifth over, with our opening bowler Steve Harrison bagging a hat trick ! Yorkshire were on the back foot for the remainder of their innings, but eventually were able to reach 143-8 in their allotted overs.
The Lancs reply got off to a positive start and we reached 40-0, before rain stopped play, on the resumption we progressed to 88-1 when again the weather intervened to the tune of thunder and lightning and after the mandatory break, the DLS target was adjusted to 121 in 32 overs. Lancs comfortably attained this score for the loss of 2 wickets meaning we were victorious by 8 wickets, with Captain Glenn Bullock unbeaten on 77.
This was our 3 National success in the last 6 years and the whole club is ver proud of our efforts. The Second XI also topped their group. but unlike the First team were unable to progress from their Phase 2 matches, but overall we feel they had a reasonably successful campaign.
Also in 2024 we entered a 70's team for the first time and although it was in large parts, trial and error we were able to field a side each week. We managed to win 4 of our 10 games which was a satisfactory performance for our inaugural season and finished in a respectable mid table position in our first season.
Lancs also take our home fixtures around the county in the belief it will attract new players and we are always looking to improve our squads with new blood. Finally I would like to say to big thank you for your support over the last season and previously.
