Year 8 Pupil Josh Armer Umpires First Women’s Division 2 Match

Josh Armer, a Year 8 pupil, had the significant milestone of umpiring his first women’s Division 2 match under the eye of experienced umpire Jon Mayor. The match featured Greenfield CC against Hayfield CC, marking an important step in Josh's umpiring career.

Josh shared his enthusiasm, stating, “I’m really enjoying umpiring. I did my YCO with Lancs in December and then my level 6 in March at Bolton Indians. I’ve done lots of U11 games in the GMCL already, but it was good to get the chance to umpire a women’s game. Annoyingly, due to the weather, we lost 7 overs and the game had to be reduced to 23 a side, but it felt great when we could finally get out and play. I think it went well!”

Jon Mayor, who has been mentoring Josh, commented on his progress: “This was the second full senior game that Josh has shadowed myself (with agreement from the opponent). Josh’s focus today was to improve his anticipation and movement when the batters were attempting to run. I am pleased to say that he is greatly improving his awareness and ensuring his movement is correct and most importantly safe. He has a very strong grasp of the laws, and I am very impressed with his knowledge given the stage he is at in his development. I look forward to further opportunities to support his progress.”

Jen Barden - Executive Director of Lancashire Cricket Foundation commented: "We started the Young Officials programme in December 2023, there are over 100 young umpires who have come along and completed their Young Officials Course, many of whom continue to officiate at their local clubs and teams. We have been really surprised at the commitment and talent shown from them as they are just starting their journey. Josh has really taken on board the training and feedback received, he has progressed really positively and i look forward to seeing his journey continue"

Despite the weather causing a reduction in the overs, Josh’s performance was commendable, and his dedication to improving his skills is evident. His journey from officiating U11 games to women’s matches is a testament to his hard work and passion for umpiring. With the support of mentors like Jon Mayor, Josh Armer is on a promising path in his umpiring career.
