Fiona Shone Honoured with the Eric Roberts Award After Outstanding Season on the Panel
Cricket umpire Fiona Shone has been named the recipient of the Eric Roberts Award, a prestigious honour awarded to the top-performing umpire progressing from Level 5 to Level 4 on the men’s or women’s officiating pathway.
The award recognises the individual who receives the highest marks during their match observations, and Fiona’s outstanding commitment and performance throughout the season have clearly set her apart.
Fiona, who is currently an M5 and W4 umpire and also serves as a Tutor for the new Umpires course, only began her umpiring journey two seasons ago. What began as a favour to her son’s 3rd XI team where she insisted on completing the official course before stepping in has blossomed into a rapidly developing career in the sport.
Last season marked Fiona’s first on the official panel, and in just a short time, she has demonstrated both technical excellence and a deep love for the game. “It’s the best seat in the house,” she says. “I love watching how bowlers can move the ball. It’s fascinating.”
Fiona has also made a significant impact in disability cricket, particularly within the Visually Impaired (VI) game. She’s had the opportunity to umpire the VI T20 Finals and was invited to an England VI training camp, further underlining her dedication to inclusive cricket.
Her ambitions are far from slowing down. “I want to see how far up the pathway I can go, especially on the women’s pathway,” she shared. “And I’d love to do more top-level disability cricket too.”
With her quick rise, keen eye, and infectious enthusiasm for officiating, Fiona is also passionate about helping new umpires get started. Her advice to those just beginning? “Listen to advice, and work out what’s useful for you. Push for opportunities—they’re out there. Be ready to work hard, but don’t forget to enjoy it.”
Winning the Eric Roberts Award is a fitting recognition of Fiona’s talent, drive, and love for the game. As she steps into her third season, the cricket community will be watching with interest—and admiration—as she continues her journey through the umpiring ranks.
