New Programme Supports Refugees and Asylum Seekers in Manchester

Following the celebration of #RefugeeWeek2025, the Lancashire Cricket Foundation is proud to shine a spotlight on a brand-new community initiative aimed at supporting and empowering refugees and asylum seekers through the power of cricket.

In the heart of Manchester, a group of 18 refugees and asylum seekers have come together to take part in a pilot cricket programme designed to provide not just sport but also community, inclusion, and well-being. Supported by ECB Level 2 qualified coaches, participants are enjoying the opportunity to play the game they love in a welcoming and supportive environment.

The programme, funded by Chance to Shine, is running over eight weeks and includes structured cricket coaching sessions in both nets and on outfields. For those wishing to take part in hardball cricket, the Lancashire Cricket Foundation (LCF) has provided all necessary protective equipment on loan, ensuring accessibility for all participants regardless of their starting point.

Chance to Shine are funding the programme with the sharing belief with Lancashire Cricket Foundation in the power of cricket to bring people together and break down barriers. By supporting refugees, we aim to create inclusive communities where everyone, regardless of their background, can experience the joy of the game, improve their well-being, and build connections that help them feel welcomed and supported.

Beyond the coaching sessions, the programme is also helping to build bridges with local cricket clubs and community groups, with plans now underway to arrange a series of friendly fixtures across different formats during the summer. These matches will offer participants further opportunity to integrate, develop their skills, and experience the full joy and community spirit of the game.

This initiative is a meaningful step towards fostering social cohesion, personal well-being, and a stronger, more inclusive cricket community in Greater Manchester.
